How To Buy A Computer

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

As with everything else, buying a computer is straightforward if you know what you are doing. For those who do not know though, it can be a complete nightmare. People who have had a computer before have a good idea about what they require and what they would like, but for those who have never had a computer before, all the components that make up a computer can appear bewildering.

The obvious answer is to buy the best that you can manage, but this still might puzzle some people, because the best is not always the most expensive. In the computer world, ‘the best’ usually means the biggest and the fastest.

Just to make it more confusing, ‘the biggest’ here does not always mean in size, but in capacity. The only large size that is important is the monitor. This is a quick rundown of how to purchase a computer and its components:

Before you buy a computer, think about why you want one. If it is for educational purposes: that is surfing the web and looking up content, you do not have to have more than a basic desktop computer. If you are constantly on the move, then you might require a laptop, or maybe cyber cafes will meet your requirements.

This kind of machine is also ample for writing letters and emails and almost any type office work. Top flight computers are only required by games players and exhibitionists.

Purchase a complete computer. That means acquiring a kit of: CPU (the ‘computer’), monitor (screen), keyboard, mouse, speakers and printer. This way you will just have to plug everything in and off you go – you can be sure that they are all compatible.

When you buy your next computer, you can buy all the bits and pieces individually to get even better value for money or a system more accurately tailored to your requirements.

Go for the biggest screen, the fastest memory and fastest hard drive and the biggest memory (RAM) and biggest hard drive (gigabytes) that you can afford. You do not have to have a great deal of ’space’ for normal office work or normal surfing, but if you get into downloading music or films, then memory soon gets eaten up, although you could always add a new external (plug-in) hard drive later, in necessary.

Make sure that you purchase a computer that is not too old, if you go second-hand. This is because you can up-grade computers for two or three years, but after that manufacturers change the casings and new components will no longer fit – planned obsolescence, it is called.

Get your computer from a well-known, trustworthy local store and ensure that it has a good guarantee. Computers do not often go wrong, but you do not want to have to send it half-way across the country and wait three weeks for it to come back. If you are in business, get two. Perhaps a laptop and a desktop and synchronize the contents of both so that you always have your data.

Following these guidelines will ensure that the computer novice gets ‘enough’ of a deal and an adequate machine that is fit for purpose without paying through the nose.

Which Laptop Computer?

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Laptop computer reviews represent a very significant font of information for those who are interested in purchasing a new computer to assist them in their occupation or to provide entertainment at home. But being an informed consumer is not an easy job for anybody.

Even though we may think that we are knowledgeable enough, we may later, discover that we were wrong in the decision we made. Or perhaps that mistake was made during the period before the decision itself was made? During the research phase maybe?

The rule of thumb is to try and read more than a few laptop computer reviews more before you think you have obtained enough information to be able to do what you need. Why is that so essential?

To start with, laptop computer reviews are written by people who are paid to write quite a lot of reviews perhaps even in one single day. As a result of this, whether the writer means to or not, he/she may end up saying pretty much the same thing about almost every laptop computer or even just glossing over the details.

Or, she/he may end up leaving pieces of information out. Making mistakes is fairly common in human work when fatigue and tedium enter the picture.

Another incentive why you should read as many laptop computer reviews as you can is that this way you will definitely come across reviews made by some people who really make use of the laptop computer you are interested in. These forms of reviews and assessments are the ones that will most probably present you with a truthful picture of how this laptop computer really works.

People who have actually used the computer will also have several points of view that big magazine reviewers may exclude from their articles or reviews. These types of laptop computer reviews will also give you an idea about whether you are thinking about buying a laptop computer that is best for you or whether you are thinking about purchasing something that is too sophisticated for your requirements and so unnecessarily expensive, or too rudimentary, and therefore low-cost but of no use.

Last but not least, different laptop computer reviews, especially if they come from several sites and consumers, will differ in the sort of information they will give you about the laptop computer. What may be absent from one assessment may be mentioned in another.

The whole mystery will not be ended until you finally own that computer. However, the larger the quantity of evaluations you read, the more accurate the image you will get. Above all, remember that unawareness of the particulars could cost you dearly and more than that, might even land you with a low quality laptop computer.

Common Home Theater Mistakes

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

A home theater takes a sizable investment of money, thought and installation, especially if you have a high quality home theater. Therefore, it is a shame that so may people just connect all the pieces in a room without giving any thought to what other things they should be doing to improve it. Unless you hire a professional consultant, you might not achieve the full potential of your home cinema system. However, it is not necessary to hire an adviser, if you just pay attention to a few common mistakes made by a lot of home cinema owners

The lighting in any cinema is very important, as I am sure you already know. Why is it then that many people do not treat it as important in their own home cinema? You never see external light – sun light – in a professional movie theater and you should not want any in yours either. Hang heavy curtains over every window in the room and let them extend beyond the window by a good margin.

Heavy curtains will not only keep external light out, but they will also dampen street noise, something else you never hear in a real movie theater. If you have neighbours close by, it will also help to prevent them from being disturbed by your loud films or music.

Do not try to save money by buying poor quality speakers. Do not mix and try to match speakers either, unless you are sure you know what you are doing. If you need five speakers and a sub-woofer, but can only afford three and the sub-woofer, buy speakers from a well-known brand that you know you can get hold of again.

Do not buy end of line speakers, as you will find upgrading hard. The best approach for the novice is to get a 5.1 surround sound set of speakers. Then, if at some point in the future you want to upgrade, you can quite easily, either by buying more or exchanging the lot in one go. One thing is for certain, a lot of the magic of going to the theater these days lies in the surround sound and you need to reproduce it at home.

It is not rocket science to put a home theater together whether it comes in kit form or not. However, if you do not feel comfortable setting it up, you would be better off having it done for you. Clearly, it is up to you how you go about this, but you could ask a relative or friend or neighbour or hire someone from the shop where you got it. My speculation is though that any reasonably competent eighteen year old has already seen one set up before and can do it for you.

Your movie theater, if it came in a kit, will or should have thorough instructions for you to follow. Please read the handbook before you start plugging things into each other. Read the manual and inspect the parts until you are well acquainted with the installation procedure and the recommended positioning of the equipment.

Make sure that the voltage is adjusted appropriately before you plug it into the mains. Most equipment is made abroad for sale to many countries, so they usually have some sort of selector for the voltage. Get it wrong and you could blow a part of the equipment, probably the amplifier, the DVD player or the screen. that could mean replacement of the module or poor reproduction of sound or picture.

It is not hard to get the installation of your home theater right, but you do have to pay some attention to detail, if you want to get the best out of it.

Why Get A Clear Computer Housing?

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

What is a clear computer housing and what might it do for you? Well, before we commence talking about the see-through computer casing, allow me to inquire you something: what does your computer?s case signify to you? I could even ask: what does your computer mean to you? I inquire this for the reason that your reply will determine what you want for your computer and its housing or case.

Most individuals have always been happy enough with the plain, average light-grey housing that comes as bog-standard with the preponderance of computers. Some have never even thought about it. But at the same time there are others who have thought about their computer?s housing a lot and who would like something unique for their computer.

Some of these people were skillful at metalwork, others at woodwork and a few at glassware and there are some truly incredible, innovative, home-produced casings out there. Especially among the gaming community. However, we are not all so talented with our hands, but that does not signify that we have to be stuck with a grey computer housing.

The simplest alternative, if you want a custom computer housing is to construct one out of acrylic – the sort of substance used to make the majority of fish tanks. You can purchase and easily cut sheets of acrylic for the sides and glue them all together with acrylic resin. That may sound easier said than done, but it truly is not. In the beginning you would have to examine the architecture of a typical computer housing and then just reproduce it in acrylic. You might create a clear computer casing in a weekend.

Or you could buy a see-through computer case kit. These kits arrive in flat-packs just like most kitchen furniture and can be effortlessly assembled according to the instructions with a screwdriver. No cutting, no measuring, just a little gentle screwing.

And I mean gentle, because the screws that come with the translucent computer casing packs are typically made of acrylic too and will snap easily. It is the only part of the construction procedure that requires a advisory note, as you don?t want to have to drill out a busted screw, do you? That would only put a downer on your fun.

So why would anyone desire a translucent computer case? I suppose that there are loads of explanations. A few individuals may just want to be different and others may want to show that they can assemble or even create such a housing. However, the see-through computer housing also has artistic and practical advantages. At least the good ones do.

On the Aesthetic Front: enthusiasts add neon lights and small LEDs that twinkle on and off or just glow eerily, perhaps activated by some occurrence, like a hard drive coming to life. These displays are called ?themes? and are typically red or blue, but can be almost any imaginable colour. Then you can include coloured fans (or paint your existing ones). You already have at least one fan in your casing and probably two or three.

On the Practical Front: lots of individuals like to see what is happening inside their computer casing and it is neither realistic nor safe to remove the cover all together. Moreover, making your own clear computer casing permits you to insert more fans as over-heating is the major cause of hardware failure. The more fans the better.

A translucent computer housing would also permit you to observe whether a fan has failed, which would result in over-heating in a normal casing and guaranteed hardware malfunction, whereas you would see it happening through your see-through computer housing and change the fan before critical injury and loss of data could transpire.

Home Theater Set-Up And First Rate Speakers

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Home theaters are very popular in the West now for many reasons, but partly due to the recession. However, I predict that after the recession is over, home theaters will take off like a rocket. In my estimation, this is because, the slump has forced people to examine their spending, which usually means cutting back. Going out, eating out and movies are all in the front line of these cuts. However, the slump is upsetting and people have to get some enjoyment from somewhere.

In the medium to long term, it is cheaper to build a home theater for a family than take them to a proper movie theater every week. Taking a family of four to the movies costs $50-$100, whereas a modest home theater might cost $1,000. It does not take long to recoup those costs. And it saves you the hassle of travelling there and back, the noise and mobile phones during the film and high prices for candy and snacks.

OK, maybe people at the moment are buying cheap packages of home theaters, but one of the first things they will replace when they get a bit of money again will be the speakers, I bet. Evidently, you need a good quality, large screen, but after that, it is the sound and the bulwark to good sound is usually poor speakers.

The most important consideration in the design of your home theater is the dimensions of your room. If the room is small, you will not have need of so many speakers. Perhaps three speakers will be enough, if the room is small. However, if you only need three speakers and a sub-woofer, get good ones.

If you have a bigger room however, the basic three home theater speakers may not be enough. You may need to put up to six speakers and a sub-woofer around the room. The position of these speakers is up to you and can depend on the shape or and size of the room anyway, but typical layouts are:

3.1 system: one speaker to the left of the screen, one to the right and one below it. You can put the sub-woofer on top of the central speaker or at the back of the room. Try it and see.

5.1 system: as 3.1, but with two speakers at the back of the room too.

6.1 system: as 5.1, but with another speaker between the rear speakers, as in the front.

7.1 system: as 6.1, but with two speakers central rear, slightly away from each other. You can move the existing rear speakers a little to the sides too.

This set-up requires a lot of wires as you can envisage. Now, you could staple the wires to the skirting board, but you should only do that after you are dead sure that you have the speakers in the right positions. Or you could hang the speakers on the walls. However, although that sounds good for music, it does not always sound all right for a movie.

The best option is wireless speakers. Wireless speakers can be moved around to suit the number of people watching the film or moved out for cleaning or redecorating purposes. You do not want to bash your nice, new, expensive speakers with the vacuum cleaner, do you?

Xbox And The Home Theater

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

There are several video game systems on the market, but if you are looking for a game console that also can be utilized for home theater entertainment, then the right choice has to be the Xbox game console. Very often, it is the case that children will want to play games in the daytime on holidays and before bed during the week, whereas parents will want to watch films at night before going to bed. Therefore, the two age groups need not clash often with their use of the home theater console.

Therefore, if you can get a device that fulfills both the roles of playing games and playing films, you can save some money. The Xbox game console fits this role, because the Xbox is one of the new generation of video game boxes that can also play films on DVD or whatever disk format.

The Xbox is actually a very hi-tech piece of equipment, something that non-game players might not have realized. It fits easily into a home theater system because it has wide screen video capability, HDTV screen resolutions and Dolby Digital and DTS sound support, making it a perfect home theater set-up component.

The Xbox is also a good looking piece of equipment, which will match any existing black home theater equipment you may already own. It does not look like just a plastic toy. It was invented by Microsoft and has a powerful, stylish look. The Xbox’s case is black with an X on it and a green Xbox logo similar to a jewel.

The Xbox is basically a cut-down computer as it has many components of a personal computer like an Intel processor, NVidia graphic chips and an internal hard drive among others. PC’s are general purpose tools, whereas the Xbox is designed for playing DVD’s in more ways than one. In other words, it is a dedicated computer. It is dedicated to the task of playing DVD’s and it does it very well.

However, it also has four controller sockets in the front of the box for connections and it has an Ethernet socket for multi player games that allows other gamers on the Internet to take part in the game. The Xbox console includes as standard: the controllers with a 9 ft cable, a standard AV cable, and an AC power cord. It also comes with a DVD loading tray and a multi signal audio-video connector for easy connection to televisions and other home theater systems.

The Xbox will transform the way you think about games and how you play them, because it is so committed to making interactive games a reality and as exciting as possible. Games are written especially for it such as the Dead or Alive series and the Halo series too.

However, their are sports games to be had too such as football and Formula 1 motor car racing. The graphics, sound and overall reality are remarkable. Finally, for parents who are worried about what their kids are watching, playing or doing, there are parental controls built into the Xbox.

Selecting Computer Components

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

When you’re purchasing a computer you must consider not only the quality of the inner components, but also the quality of the peripheral ones that either come with it or are available for it to let you to make the most of the whole multimedia experience.

Computer peripherals, from printers to web cams, are an important part of our computing lives and activities, if not the most significant one, depending on our needs and necessities. When you are confronted with having to choose peripherals, consider a few aspects before making your purchase: utility, price/quality combination and the purpose they will need to perform.

So, when buying a printer, you should think about why you are purchasing it. For example, if it is meant to be an office printer and it will be typically used to print out contracts and papers, then the best choice is an all-in-one printer that can print, scan and operate as a fax machine at the same time. If however you want a home printer ordinarily to create copies of your digital photographs then thinking aboiut a colour printer is a must and perhaps you should consider getting a laser one too.

The keyboard and the mouse are first in the computer-user relationship and they also add a dash of personality to your private computer. Browse for a complete set-up that can include a mouse pad and try to match them with the colour and shape of your computer case – even a clear computer case. Currently, optical and wireless mice are the best choice, so purchasing a wireless multimedia keyboard would be a fit too.

These days, clear computer cases are all the fashion and they truly do give the impression of being quite advanced, depending on how they are illuminated. These clear computer cases fit really well with a computer on which games will be played a lot. The clear computer case is ordinarily constructed of acrylic and is totally see-through, which means that all the internal components are able to be seen. The clear computer case is normally ‘themed’, that is it has a prime colour in the acrylic, most frequently red or blue. The case is then illuminated by a series of theme-coloured LEDs which are triggered when certain events occur (for instance, when the CD drive is rotating.

Communication with loved ones is frequently completed over the Internet. So, why not render it just right by buying a web cam to allow real time interaction between friends and family? Furthermore, you will require a microphone to be able to hear and see your loved one at the same time and then you can talk as if he or she was in the room with you.

There are numerous kinds of computer components on the market: external hard drives, loud speakers (from small to very big), real 5.1 systems, scanners, card readers for your digital camera and loads more. All you have to do is put together a list of the uses you need your PC for and then go shopping for the required peripherals for each of those uses. Whenever those needs can be combined, as with the printer/scanner, you ought to try to do that to get around using up a lot of space.
