Beautiful Landscape Lighting

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Whilst having a great garden is important you ought to consider ways of allowing the beauty of your garden to show through in various types of weather conditions. Some people also want to have the opportunity of having their garden illuminated in the night. For these people, looking at different landscape lighting options will allow you the chance of having your garden looking just the way you want it, no matter what the natural lighting conditions are.

In order to provide the best landscape lighting conditions, you will be able to choose from a wide variety of lighting fixtures. These fittings can be in the form of lamps, lanterns, spotlights, halogen lights and even solar-powered lights. The price of these lighting fixtures varies for each type of lighting.

If you are thinking of using landscape lighting you will have to choose where to put the lights in order to achieve the best lighting effects. You may also want to think about which lights will shower your garden with a bright lighting. You can look in gardening magazines to obtain an idea of the various ways that landscape lighting fixtures can be used.

While it may possible to find ideas for placing landscape lighting in your garden from landscape and gardening magazines, there is another way as well. For this other method, you should look at your garden in the daytime and in the night time. In the morning you will need to look what spots in your garden could be enhanced by the use of landscape lighting. Then, when night falls, you look out at your garden again and see what areas would benefit from the use of lights.

Then, the morning after this nocturnal exercise, you should go out into the garden and mark out roughly where you feel there is a requirement for lighting. Once you have inspected this area properly, try imagining what type of lights would be of use. You can then go to the garden store to look for these lights, after you have chosen the sort of landscape lighting.

After you have found your perfect lights and you have read the instructions on setting them up you will need to start fixing the landscape lighting in a manner that will make the most out of your garden. Coloured lighting is worth considering too.

After you have completed your tests and have installed your final version, you will see what a difference having the right landscape lighting can make to your garden. From now on, after night falls, you will see the beauty of your garden in a different light.

Organic, Healthy Dog Food

Monday, June 14th, 2010

The requirement of healthy, organic food seems to apply just as much to animals as to humans, since a lot of pet owners would rather buy organic products to feed man’s best friend. One could be forgiven for being surprised at the vast amount of organic dog food on offer on the market. Just like for humans, there are many of pet health issues that one could cure or even prevent completely by the use of organic pet food.

For instance, organic dog food could reduce the risk of the dog getting skin diseases and allergies. The explanation for the positive health impact is the absence of additives, chemicals, colourants and pesticides. Instead there are just grain extracts and high quality proteins for ingredients in organic dog food. Organic dog food also provides more nutrients, which is reflected in the higher levels of energy and the normal weight of the dog.

Normal dog food can cause diabetes and excess weight with all the other problems that accompany these illnesses: back ailment, organ failure and decreased mobility. How can organic dog food help here, then? Well, because organic pet food does not contain bulk filler; they are nutrient-packed products that create energy not fat. Moreover, it is far better and definitely a lot easier to prevent health problems than try to treat them afterwards.

A better digestion and a stronger immunity system are the other main benefits that accompany the feeding of organic dog food. Due to the absence of chemicals normally present in regular pet food, your dog will not vomit or experience gas or diarrhea. A more efficient is what you will achieve with a healthy diet. Furthermore, the quality of the nutritional substances in organic dog food, boosts the immunity functions, thereby reducing the risks of infection and all sorts of specific diseases that affect dogs on an everyday basis.

A large number of veterinarians claim that organic dog food substantially increases the life of any animal, to say nothing of the fact that it will pass through old age a lot better. It is not uncommon that pet owners who choose organic dog food, are also interested in eating organic foods themselves, sticking by healthy natural products that boost bodily functions and avoid toxins and disease.

Ask your local dog food supplier about organic dog food and if there is none available in your local shop, try to order it online. There are plenty of web sites that offer such products at pretty good prices.

One last tip, be very wary of dried dog food, no matter what it says on the packet. I used to have a dog that stayed at home alone during the day, while I went to work. I didn’t like to leave ‘wet’ food, because of flies, bacteria and vermin, so I bought dry food, which would not deteriorate during the day. However, within six years she had diabetes, which meant that I had to inject her with insulin every morning. The veterinary said that it was very common for dogs fed only on biscuits to get diabetes, so check with your vet first or feed organic wet food.

Patio Furniture

Friday, April 30th, 2010

If you have a lovely patio or deck or a beautiful garden, then you have to have good patio furniture in order to enjoy it. There is no finer end to a busy day than sitting outside on the patio with a drink and a newspaper or a book. I like to sit in the garden after the sun has waned a little, but before the mosquitoes come out for a few hours reading a book.

There are many different styles of patio furniture to choose from that range from classic to modern. There is also a full range of choice in that there are chairs, loungers, swinging sofas, tables, outdoor fridges, barbecue sets and patio heaters amongst other things. A full set need not cost more than $1,000, but you can start with a table and two chairs and build up your patio furniture set step by step.

The many options you have when looking for patio furniture are the designs and the matter it is made from. Most patio furniture stays outside all day and all night in any weather, so it important to get furniture that is well-made and weather-proof. All weather furniture is normally made from plastic-coated steel, wicker, massive wood or moulded plastic.

Whatever you choose, make sure that the guarantee makes your choice worth the money. For example, I mean, if the furniture costs $200, but has a 12 month guarantee, then you should be prepared to pay $4 a week for your investment and everything else is a bonus.

Another tip is to buy your patio furniture from a dependable manufacturer or a trustworthy retailer, unless it is massive timber furniture in which case you will want a trustworthy local craftsman. It depends where you live of course, but any patio furniture is going to have a hard time of it and it will remain outside sometimes no matter what your intentions are now.

Standard plastic patio furniture is pretty good and will stand up to all but the coldest of weather, which can make it become fragile. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can have the same effect on cheap plastic chairs. White is the usual colour, but there are others. Make sure that you buy something that will take your weight, especially if you are a bit on the heavy side. I have had legs of plastic chairs go on me, but luckily I was on grass both times. On concrete or near the edge of raised decking could be very dangerous.

Once you have selected your patio table, chairs and possibly loungers, there are one or two other things that I think are essential to allowing the full enjoyment of your patio deck. For example, if you want to use your outdoor furniture in the evening you may find it chilly or you may be troubled by insects.

This need not be a problem. You can get a patio heater for quite a reasonable price. A gas patio heater will keep up to eight people lovely and warm. To complete your patio furniture set, you may want a mosquito trap of some kind.

Why Dogs Snore

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

It is not unusual for pet owners to allow their pets to sleep with them at night. In fact, one third of pet owners have at some time, allowed their pets to sleep on their beds. Dogs provide a companionship that can’t be given by any other kind of animal. But this doesn’t mean to say that it is unlikely for some people to let their cats and another pets sleep with them too.

It is facilitated too by dogs having a sleep pattern that is very much like our own. Dogs usually trust their owners completely, which makes them a bit more relaxed during the night. This explains why most dogs fall asleep easily and later on, go into a deep sleep where REM sleep activities can occur. In fact, once a dog enters this stage, the owner may need to call them several times before they can truly be roused from sleep.

For sure, lots of us have already observed a dog paddling during sleep or at times, barking with his eyes closed. These dogs are believed to be dreaming. Breathing patterns can also be observed among dogs. For example, there are breeds which breathe more heavily while there are those who breathe very lightly. The heavy breathers are much more prone to snoring than those who do not breathe as heavily.

Dogs which snore can be rather a nuisance during the night, depending on the degree and frequency of the occurrence of this phenomenon. Like with humans, there are various considerations why dogs snore. Most though deal with the obstruction of the passage of air in the throat caused by the collapse of certain areas along the throat. The same as in humans.

A dog that snores very badly should be checked for various issues to see which treatment can be best provided. Some dogs are especially prone to specific allergic reactions that cause obstruction in the windpipe. It may also be that there is some excess tissue in the areas that are preventing correct breathing. It is best if a veterinarian checks on different factors through careful evaluation of the dog’s anatomical features and general physical symptoms.

Is you dog obese? I ask this because, as with humans, obese dogs are more likely to snore than thin ones. This is because they have more flesh surrounding their windpipes. Therefore, they have excess tissue hanging around the throat which can potentially cause obstructions. Once this problem is corrected, the risk of snoring will be decreased. This would not only be healthy for your dogs, you may actually enjoy a decent night’s sleep too.

The facial features of the dog in general affect the amount of snoring too. For example, some dogs have pushed-in faces which restricts their nasal passages to a certain degree. The construction of their nasal passages also largely contributes to their problems of breathing. They are very much like humans with the flu, who have to breathe using only twenty-five percent of their nostril capacity. Dog breeds with shorter faces need to expend lots of effort to breathe properly. It takes them more effort to breathe and they are also more likely to snore loudly.

Minor surgery can afford your dog great relief. However, be certain that, before you take any decision, you are well informed about the potential risks and consequences of surgery to stop your dog snoring. Most procedures are irreversible, so careful thought should be given to any operation you allow. In fact, it is best to follow the recommendations offered by your veterinary surgeon.

The Workshop Heater

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

If you have converted your garage into a workshop or home office, you are sure to need heating in one form or another. This is because most garages are not built to the same standards of insulation as the main residential building. However, that need not present a difficulty. You may even have the opposite problem during the summer, as garages often do not have windows, or at least large ones, either.

Ventilation could be another matter that you will have to cope with, but we will come to that later. If you have a plentiful supply of dead wood, you could set up a pot-bellied stove, but you will have to vent the flue outside. This is very easily done, since most garage walls are only one brick or block thick. However, if they do not burn correctly, there can be a smell, which you may find disagreeable.

Or you could use a paraffin/kerosene heater. They are cheap to buy and are readily portable. These heaters do not necessarily have to have a flue. They are easy to turn on as many of them have an electric starter. Some also have a thermostat to control the temperature. They can be a hazard if there are children around as they can be tipped over. However, for most people, the problem would be the smell given off.

You could use an electric hot air heater. They are quite cheap to buy, are easily portable and do not require a flue, but they can create a very dry atmosphere and are costly to run.

One of the most common choices these days is a gas heater. There are many different kinds of gas heater, but most run on butane or propane. Most of the models are fairly reasonably priced. The main advantage of a gas heater is that they give consistent heat, are fairly cheap to run and are portable. Or at least many of them are.

You could have one built in, but it is hardly worth it, unless you are using gas that needs to be vented. Propane gas heaters also come with or without thermostatic controls. A propane heater could also double as a patio or deck heater on chilly evenings.

These gas heaters come in two forms: vented and unvented. The unvented models are the portable ones. They use the air from the room and the vented models have a flue that vents straight out of the garage. The slight disadvantage of the unvented model is that you have to keep the room airy at all times.

Therefore, if you choose a portable, unvented propane heater, you must leave a window partly open in order to allow the exchange of air and these heaters can be used as patio or deck heaters during the spring and autumn/fall. However, the vented gas heaters are fixed and have a flue attached, so they cannot be taken outside. Furthermore, if you decide on a vented model, you would be better off getting a professional in to install it for you by the book.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with the propane outdoor heater. If you are interested in patio heaters too, please click through to Residential Patio Heaters.

Should You Landscape Your Garden?

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

If you have more than a small town garden, then landscaping your garden will probably be one of your considerations. If you have just bought the land, or you think that it is time for a garden make-over, there are methods of going about it. The easiest technique of going about planning a garden, is to first take a good look at the landscape of your garden. This can be difficult if the garden is established and in full flower.

Therefore, it can be better to delay until autumn or winter, so that you can see the true lie of the land. You could make a plan of the garden on graph paper and take a lot of photos too. Identify the photos on the back of them and relate them to the grid on your graph paper. There may be bumps and hollows, potholes, rocky areas and even a marsh or a pond to deal with.

These are probably natural features and if you want to alter them, you will have to take on the underlying reason. The feature is only the symptom. Like freckles or spots! If you look at the state of affairs in this way, it makes planning simpler.

For example, a rocky patch probably means that the Earth is throwing stones up gradually and if you want to clean it up, you will be picking up stones for the rest of your life. Similarly, if your wet area is the result of natural drainage from higher ground, you will have to drain it and put in permanent drainage, because it is not going to stop raining for you.

So, you can either work with nature or you will be working against it for the rest of your life. Either that or paying someone else to do it for you. Another point is that the flora and fauna that uses your locale does so because of how it is. If you change the landscape, your current range of flora and fauna might move on or just die. A lot depends on how much land we are talking about, but in general, I would say that the larger the area, the more you should leave it alone.

On the other hand, you can add features more easily than remove them. For instance, if you have an area with poor soil, you could improve it with compost or put a pond there. Shade and existing fences or sheds should also be noted on your graph paper, although being man-made, these are simpler to remove or alter.

Next you should decide what type of garden you want, within the constraints of the existing landscape, how much work you are willing to put into it and how much money you want to pay out on it. Enhancing the natural elements of the land is the easiest way of landscaping your garden.

If you have a marshy area, why not put a low wall around it and turn it into a pond? If you have a rocky patch, why not collect up the stones and create a rockery? If you have a few trees, try growing wisteria, honeysuckle or vines through them.

If you are in the shade, buy flowers that would rather the shade and vice-versa. It is a struggle to go against nature and unless you have a good reason to do it, it is not really worthwhile. Then build a patio or deck and sit outside and enjoy all the landscaping that you have saved yourself in your garden.

Cool Dog Names

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Fashion appears to dictate everything these days. From what you wear to what you name your dog, everything you do is decreed by the need to be cool. Cute dog names are hard to come by and even harder to choose. This is because as soon as something is in fashion, than it is out again.

Who would want to choose a cool dog name that may not be fashionable tomorrow? People tend to play it safe as a result, hence why the same names have been so popular for so long. To try and break that cycle, five cute dog names are listed below with the reasons why you should choose one of them for your dog.

Phoenix: What could be cuter than a bird that goes up in flames, but then rises from the ashes? Phoenix is one of the cute dog names that will never go out of fashion because it is rooted in history. It has a timeless air about it, which has somewhat surprisingly failed to increase its popularity.

Star: Star is one of the cute dog names because it has so many meanings that you can have a hard time finding out where to begin. A star in the sky is a phenomenon and a star can refer to someone that excels in a certain field. It is indeed a high form of praise and therefore is definitely a cute dog name.

Lady: Lady is one of the most popular dog names but it is also one of the cute dog names because of the Disney cartoon film, Lady and the Tramp, which was a huge hit. This made the name popular but also gave it some credibility. In this case popularity comes second to cuteness.

Elvis: The coolest of cute dog names. Elvis Presley was undoubtedly cool and remains cool today even after his death. It is infinitely cool to name your dog after an icon who never goes out of fashion.

Shadow: There is a dark and ethereal quality about Shadow that makes it a cool dog name. It would be best used on a big breed of dog though, because it wouldn’t have the same striking effect with a small breed.

Whatever cool dog names you use for your pooch, it is one sure-fire way to give them an identity of their own and make them memorable in the eyes of others. .

Electronic Bug Zapper

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

The hand held insect killer is the best way of clearing your immediate vicinity of insects, especially the flying ones such as mosquitoes. The indoor bug zapper vaporizes any insect from a mosquito to a gnat instantly on contact with a nice, loud, electrical ‘zap’!

However, this is not to say that the indoor insect killer cannot be used outdoors, as long as it is not raining. It should be treated like any other high voltage electrical equipment. Keep the hand held insect killer dry and definitely do not use it while you are standing in the pool!

Models do vary a lot, but there are really only two types of hand held bug zapper: the battery operated bug killer and the rechargeable electric insect killer. Both models are equally effective at killing bugs and employ the same principle.

The electric insect killer looks like a ‘kids’ tennis racket, but with three sets of ’strings’, which are in fact wires. The innermost network of wires becomes live at the push of a button while the other two grids, one on either side, are earths.

When a bug is trapped between the wires of the indoor insect zapper, it creates a short, which evaporates it instantaneously with a loud crack. The indoor insect killer will kill other insects too, but they tend to burn rather than explode.

I have been using the rechargeable kind for five years and am extremely happy with the electric bug zapper. In fact, the electric bug zapper has come a long way over the last few years. A fully charged electric insect zapper is strong enough to last for several hundred swipes and will hold it’s charge, if unused, for weeks without any significant discharge.

The rechargeable battery unit will take serious use for the best part of a year, although its capability to hold a charge for a few weeks gradually reduces after six or seven months.

The latest indoor insect zapper I’ve used has a main on/off switch, a light that shines when it is live (the brightness of this light also indicates the battery’s strength) and a light that comes on when it is plugged in for recharge.

The instructions say that the bug zapper should be (re)charged for about sixteen hours. However, I usually put it on charge over night once or twice every week or two, although the hand held bug zapper shows a marked increase in performance after only a few hours recharging.

The latest version I’ve had also comes with a strong beam called a ‘headlamp’. I have found this very handy when walking in the garden, but I’m unsure whether it’s supposed to attract the mosquitoes in the dark so that you can zap them if you’re feeling bored or just vindictive, rather like an Anglerfish.

I’ve used the headlamp on my hand held bug killer for that reason too, but the beam uses a lot of battery power. All in all, the electric insect zapper is a big asset at any outdoor event. The electric insect killer is useful to ‘clean out’ your bedroom before retiring; it’s unbeatable for evening mosquitoes and it will clear a lunch table of wasps as well.
