Astronomy – Important Dates BC

Monday, July 26th, 2010

There is no uncertainty that astronomy is the oldest science and there is also no doubt that astronomy was being studied by everyone, not only the wise men, thousands and thousands of years ago.

We do not know exactly why they did it, but we can deduce that early man noticed a correlation between the weather and the stars, which were themselves not fully understood, of course.

Early man, probably even as far back as Neanderthal man, noticed the relationship between the weather and herd movements and crop growth, or at least fruit and nuts on local trees, if they did not have planted crops.

This means that people could see a connection between the stars and food availability. This relationship was probably ritualized into some sort of religion like early Wicca. Therefore, the stars became a very important part of the lives of every single person and it is likely that astrology and astronomy were widely intermixed by the average person.

However, there were also people who did not only use the stars as some enormous celestial clock and who tried to make sense of the whole shebang. I am going to narrate below, eight of the most important dates or years in the history of astronomy before Christ walked on the Earth. Never forget that they had nothing but an abacus to do there calculations and no telescopes, which came about two thousand years later.

585 BC: Thales of Miletus (c. 625- c. 547), a Greek, predicted a solar eclipse in Asia Minor purely on the basis of his observations and calculations. It was not a lucky guess!

c. 400 BC: the astronomer Oenopedes (5th. century). also a Greek, announces that the Earth is tilted on its axis with respect to the Sun.

352 BC: the Chinese report what they called a ‘guest star’, a supernova, which was the earliest reported sighting.

340 BC: The astronomer, Kidinnu (b. Babylon c. 379 BC) discovers the precession of the Equinoxes, ie the apparent change in the position of the stars caused by the Earth’s wobbling on its axis.

c. 300 BC: a ‘committee’ of Chinese astronomers compile star maps of the visible universe.

c. 240 BC: Chinese astronomers observe and make notes about Halley’s Comet. Also Eratosthenes of Cyrene (c. 276 – c.194 BC), a Greek, correctly calculate the Earth’s dimensions.

165 BC: Chinese astronomers notice sunspots for the first time.

c. 130 BC: the astronomer Hipparchus of Nicea (b. 147 BC), a Greek, correctly calculates the distance to the Earth’s Moon and also rediscovers the precession of the Equinoxes.

You will see from the dates above that obviously not everyone let nature and the stars govern their lives, as the common farmer or hunter did. Some men actually took pen to paper, but before pen and paper even existed, and tried to work out ‘why these manifestations occurred?’.

These individuals must have been remarkable men to have worked these measurements out by calculation, observation by the naked eye and rationalization alone.

Will I Need A Home Movie Theater Projector?

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Going to the movies is a very popular recreational pastime especially for those young professionals conducting very running corporate affairs. However, for those who cannot afford to waste time travelling to and from movie theaters, the solution to this recreational dilemma might be just inside their own house.

You could recreate the visual and sound systems of the movie theaters with your very own personal custom home theater system. The best custom home theater installation certainly can include high quality components that are capable of recreating the entire movie theater experience without having to drive from your dwelling to the movie theater wasting time and effort queuing in heavy traffic. This modern technology can give you the relaxation and experience that full-sized movie theaters provide.

The basic components, such as a big screen and speakers with clear and flicker free images from a high quality DVD, can easily provide an almost-authentic movie theater experience. Home theater experts recommend that before you decide on the final set-up and equipment for your custom home theater system, the size of the location must be the first consideration.

Therefore, if you have a small sized room for your home theater system, a television set may be best placed in the center of one wall and three loudspeakers, placed on the left, right and center, might be enough to provide the surround sound you want from a custom movie theater. However, if you have a bigger room, a home theater projector might be the best option for providing that big screen experience.

Home theater projector screens can recreate that authentic movie theater experience. If you are going to use quite a big room for your home theater system, you could add more speakers around the room in combination with your home theater projector and home theater projector screen. Another useful tip is that a sub-woofer could also help to provide the best surround sound to enable you to create the authentic sound of a movie theater in your very own living room.

There are various designs and models of home theater projector you could choose from. You will have to become acquainted with the qualities of each one, before you decide which one to purchase. It may also be necessary for you to enlist the services of a home theater expert in order to get the home theater package that will give you the best entertainment value. This will mean not having to spend an unnecessary amount of time and money on your home theater system and home theater projector.

It is so easy to buy equipment with an unnecessarily large capacity for your home theater, especially if you do not know what the possible choices are and the various requirements that your home theater may have due to its dimensions. The size of your home theater projector screen should be a function of the size of your room and the components of your custom home theater. For example, from where you plan to sit to the screen should be between two and five times the diameter of the screen. So, looking at it from the other perspective, if you are going to sit 10 feet (120 inches) from the screen, then the screen should be 24-60 inches, but it is very subjective and depends on the viewers eyesight.

Your home theater designer could easily also suggest options that may not require a television set for your home theater. How is this so? The reason for this is the technological innovations provided by computers and home theater projectors. Home theater projectors like InFocus screenplay models can be used in conjunction with a computer in a small room set-up. Home theater projectors are also lightweight and may be transported easily. For this reason, a projector is very useful for use in custom home theaters and business presentations.

Home theater projectors and home theater projector screens can help provide an authentic cinematic experience. This kind of set-up is extremely handy for business presentations and that is why it is becoming ever more popular. The combination of your custom home and custom office theater systems is a new phenomenon, which only a couple of smart consumers have dreamt up.

However, I am sure that being aware of all these options: ie, that a basic television set, three speakers and a DVD player can be perfectly adequate for people who only want a basic home theater, you may decide that you do not really need a home theater projector, especially if the room for your custom home theater system is not very large.

Enjoy a cinematic experience right in your very own home by thinking about your options intelligently. Then you can enjoy the relaxation a movie theater gives you without having to put up with boring traffic jams on the way to and from the movie theater.

Adware And Spyware Blockers

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

I would like to tell you the story of a law school student whose dissertation was about money laundering. She frequently used to Google the term to come up with a ready list of Internet references. This proved to be helpful to her and the entire process of writing her dissertation became easier for it. After a few months, she came across several problems like being directed to a page which was totally irrelevant to money laundering every time she entered that search term.

At first, she thought it was just a hiccup in the Internet system and then she rationalized that maybe it was a difficulty with the search engine she is using, but the continual recurrence of the problem, made her consider that she had picked up a virus of some sort. We all detest people bugging us, but people we can ward of.

What this law student was faced with was a computer bug that she could not ward off on her own. In the first place, she was not a technologically-savvy individual and in the second place she never used her laptop for anything other than academic research and the actual writing of her papers.

The situation above is not an unusual issue. There are many people who find themselves caught up in technological problems that are mystifying, but which can actually be described in two words: spyware and adware. The notorious term ’spyware’ was first used in the year 1995 but it was popularized in the year 2000. Spyware is computer software infiltrated into a personal computer in order to access the personal data of the user.

This is done by capturing your keystrokes, web browsing history and even scanning the user?s hard drive. It may sound like something you see in James Bond movies, but that is wrong because anyone can become a victim of spyware. Spyware can be used to spy on criminals because it is advantageous to society, but what what about the use of spyware to intercept credit card data and the like?

What people can do to guard themselves is to block spyware and other software like it such as adware and malware. This can be done quite easily by loading an adware and spyware blocker. The function of these blocking programs include removing or disabling existing spyware or to inhibit the installation of these malevolent programs.

Spyware, adware and malware are not like viruses or worms which replicate themselves, but they are just as much aggravation because they disturb your computer’s behavior. One of the most common nuisances caused by these programs is the slowing down of the computer which is very exasperating.

In some infections, spyware is not even obvious as the cause of the problem. Therefore, it is best to have a blocker set up on your computer to avoid the infection in the first place. It is far easier to prevent than cure and it is also far better to be safe than sorry

Common Home Theater Mistakes

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

A home theater takes a sizable investment of money, thought and installation, especially if you have a high quality home theater. Therefore, it is a shame that so may people just connect all the pieces in a room without giving any thought to what other things they should be doing to improve it. Unless you hire a professional consultant, you might not achieve the full potential of your home cinema system. However, it is not necessary to hire an adviser, if you just pay attention to a few common mistakes made by a lot of home cinema owners

The lighting in any cinema is very important, as I am sure you already know. Why is it then that many people do not treat it as important in their own home cinema? You never see external light – sun light – in a professional movie theater and you should not want any in yours either. Hang heavy curtains over every window in the room and let them extend beyond the window by a good margin.

Heavy curtains will not only keep external light out, but they will also dampen street noise, something else you never hear in a real movie theater. If you have neighbours close by, it will also help to prevent them from being disturbed by your loud films or music.

Do not try to save money by buying poor quality speakers. Do not mix and try to match speakers either, unless you are sure you know what you are doing. If you need five speakers and a sub-woofer, but can only afford three and the sub-woofer, buy speakers from a well-known brand that you know you can get hold of again.

Do not buy end of line speakers, as you will find upgrading hard. The best approach for the novice is to get a 5.1 surround sound set of speakers. Then, if at some point in the future you want to upgrade, you can quite easily, either by buying more or exchanging the lot in one go. One thing is for certain, a lot of the magic of going to the theater these days lies in the surround sound and you need to reproduce it at home.

It is not rocket science to put a home theater together whether it comes in kit form or not. However, if you do not feel comfortable setting it up, you would be better off having it done for you. Clearly, it is up to you how you go about this, but you could ask a relative or friend or neighbour or hire someone from the shop where you got it. My speculation is though that any reasonably competent eighteen year old has already seen one set up before and can do it for you.

Your movie theater, if it came in a kit, will or should have thorough instructions for you to follow. Please read the handbook before you start plugging things into each other. Read the manual and inspect the parts until you are well acquainted with the installation procedure and the recommended positioning of the equipment.

Make sure that the voltage is adjusted appropriately before you plug it into the mains. Most equipment is made abroad for sale to many countries, so they usually have some sort of selector for the voltage. Get it wrong and you could blow a part of the equipment, probably the amplifier, the DVD player or the screen. that could mean replacement of the module or poor reproduction of sound or picture.

It is not hard to get the installation of your home theater right, but you do have to pay some attention to detail, if you want to get the best out of it.

How To Use Dairy Produce: Part 3 – Eggs

Monday, May 24th, 2010

The Basic Preparation Of Foods: Dairy Produce.

EGGS: Part 1

Eggs can be fresh or dried, dried eggs being only chickens’ eggs without the shell and water. Dried egg should be stored in a cool, dry place – it may not be stored in the refrigerator! Store eggs for several days or a week in a cool place not close to strong-smelling foods. An egg stand is an ideal gadget for this. If the eggs are dirty, wipe them clean with a damp cloth- washing will only remove the natural oils which help to preserve the eggs.

Pickled Eggs: eggs laid in the Spring keep longer than those laid in the other seasons. Eggs that can not be cleaned-up, must be refused. Waterglass or the other special preparations should be used. If an egg floats to the surface, use it at once. Try to maintain the room temperature around 2-8 C and they should remain edible for 6 to 9 months.

Preparing Eggs for Cooking: break each egg into a cup on its own, before adding it to the other ingredients to ensure that it is still fresh. If you wish to separate the white from the yolk, tip the contents of the egg back and forth between the two egg shell halves and the albumen (white) will separate from the yolk. Beat the eggs with a whisk or a fork in an appropriate bowl. Egg whites should be whipped with a knife on a plate – a tiny amount of of salt will help.

Raw eggs used to be prescribed for invalids as they are easily digestible, but, this not to be recommended these days due to the ubiquity of salmonella. One method, presented here for the curious was to strain a beaten egg into a mug and slowly add a cup of hot milk (or tea, coffee or lemon water; add sugar to taste. Sherry was often added also.

Cooking Eggs: eggs must be cooked slowly because the albumen solidifies at a temperature lower than that of boiling water and becomes ‘tough’ at higher temperatures. Similarly, if raw egg is used to thicken a sauce and the liquid is subsequently allowed to boil, the sauce will ‘curdle’, i.e. the egg will solidify into small specks, ruining its texture.

Coddling: produces easily digested egg-whites, making it an ideal meal for invalids and children. Lower the eggs into 3″of boiling water; replace the lid and remove from heat. Let it stand for: 7 mins for medium-, 5 mins for soft- and 20 mins for hard-boiled eggs .

Boiling: lower fresh eggs gently into 75mm boiling water with a spoon. Cover and boil gently for 3-3″ mins for soft-, 4-5 mins medium- and 10 mins hard-boiled eggs.

Place the eggs in eggcups: tap the shell to crack it, pemitting the steam to escape and so preventing further cooking. For sandwiches, salads etc: boil egg for 12 mins and plunge into cold water. This enables the shell to be easily removed and discourages a black ring around the yolk.

Benefits of Stopping Smoking

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Giving up an addiction which you’ve had almost all of your life can be extremely hard. Many smokers who want to quit their unhealthy habit hesitate because they feel that it’s too late or it’s too hard for them to stop. Luckily this is not true. It’s never too late to change a bad habit.

The complete process of quitting smoking will probably take a long time and will require determination and will power by the smoker. Although at first it may be painfull to step away from being addicted to nicotine, as a smoker who wants to stop, it is better to focus on the benefits of quitting smoking that you will get.

It’s a well-known fact that smoking is the cause of many different kinds of cancers and illnesses. Doctors say that each time a person smokes a cigarette, he or she is losing some of their life span, health, money and also respect. We live in a world where there are many anti-smoking lobbies working to ban smoking that smokers are generally not seen in a favourable light. So why not think about the benefits of stopping smoking and lose your addiction instead of losing everything for the sake of a cigarette?

As they say, ‘health is wealth’ and one of the biggest benefits of stopping smoking is improved health. It really does not matter if you’ve smoked for a few of years or have been a chain smoker for 30 years. What does matter is that you have decided to quit and starting from this point, you will live a richer life with fewer infections and less time in a doctor’s surgery.

The benefits of stopping smoking are not only the increased health and an increase in life expectancy, but it can also have a positive effect on social life – you will have more friends and more (self) respect. Once a smoker quits this deadly addiction he or she will run less risk of developing cancer or heart disease and it will also mean that the ex-smoker will breathe fresher air instead of air polluted with cigarette smoke, which will mean far less coughing and breathlessness.

The benefits of quitting smoking are almost boundless. For instance, smoking can have an adverse effect on sexual health, dumping the habit would mean an improvement in fertility rate. Moreover, unlike previously, you’ll have whiter teeth, fresher breath and a higher energy level. Furthermore, family and friends will have fresh air to breathe at last. Another benefit is the savings in your wallet. Cigarettes are very expensive, so, quitting smoking would mean that the money that was used for cigarettes could be used for other good reasons such as treating yourself to a little bit of what you fancy.

The benefits of quitting smoking are indeed many and the plus-points of smoking are yet to be discovered. Sure, it brings in a lot of tax and keeps some people employed, but then smokers take more time off work and spend more time in hospital than non-smokers. Smokers say it calms their nerves, but so would relaxation techniques such as yoga. Let’s face it, the public mood has swung far against smoking and smokers are vilified and pitied nowadays. They also look silly nipping out of the restaurant or pub for a cigarette every hour or less.

What Is A Halo 3 Mod?

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

A Halo 3 mod is generally thought of as any software modification that changes the game play in the very popular video game for the Xbox 360, Halo 3. But the terminology also encompasses many other modifications, such as physical changes made to the Xbox 360 console to show the world that you are a hard-core Halo fanatic.

However, before someone can create a Halo 3 mod, they need the proper tools, together with some technical expertise. These tools generally include a couple of bits of software that allow people to de-construct, edit, and reconstruct Halo 3 files. It would also involve some hardware to allow the Xbox 360 hard drive to be read into a PC and the files to be restored to that hard drive.

You have to do this because the Xbox 360 is not a platform on which files can be modified. Previously, the hardware developers, in this case Microsoft, made the tools available to those who paid the licensing fee. But as time passed, especially in the case of Halo 3 mods, the community has developed several tools and techniques to achieve what needs to be done for modification.

A Halo 3 mod also includes, as stated earlier, physical changes to the Xbox 360 console itself. For instance, some people might take off the case and actually carve the words ‘Halo 3′ into it. They might also compliment this by painting the console red, blue or green to match the colour of the armour of the characters in the game.

However, it’s a pretty extreme way to say to the world – I like Halo 3 – in that it could cause actual damage that renders the Xbox 360 unplayable. People often display their customized Xbox 360s on photo-sharing sites such as Flickr and when they go toattend live LAN events.

One of the things that people who are interested in the world of the Halo 3 mod try to insist on is that the mods should not be created for cheating. Modifications are fun to get a new twist on Halo 3 play, or a new look or feel for certain levels. But if they’re used to make the game unfair in favour of one person or team, they destroy the overall game experience for everyone.

One website where a person can find many a Halo 3 mod is H3mod.com. The site calls itself the ‘future of Halo modding’. It seems to me to be a good place to begin if you really want to find out more about a certain Halo 3 mod.

If you like Halo 3 and are interested in learning more about it, why not go over to Halo 3 Mod on our web site entitled Halo 3 Insider Secrets

Patio Furniture

Friday, April 30th, 2010

If you have a lovely patio or deck or a beautiful garden, then you have to have good patio furniture in order to enjoy it. There is no finer end to a busy day than sitting outside on the patio with a drink and a newspaper or a book. I like to sit in the garden after the sun has waned a little, but before the mosquitoes come out for a few hours reading a book.

There are many different styles of patio furniture to choose from that range from classic to modern. There is also a full range of choice in that there are chairs, loungers, swinging sofas, tables, outdoor fridges, barbecue sets and patio heaters amongst other things. A full set need not cost more than $1,000, but you can start with a table and two chairs and build up your patio furniture set step by step.

The many options you have when looking for patio furniture are the designs and the matter it is made from. Most patio furniture stays outside all day and all night in any weather, so it important to get furniture that is well-made and weather-proof. All weather furniture is normally made from plastic-coated steel, wicker, massive wood or moulded plastic.

Whatever you choose, make sure that the guarantee makes your choice worth the money. For example, I mean, if the furniture costs $200, but has a 12 month guarantee, then you should be prepared to pay $4 a week for your investment and everything else is a bonus.

Another tip is to buy your patio furniture from a dependable manufacturer or a trustworthy retailer, unless it is massive timber furniture in which case you will want a trustworthy local craftsman. It depends where you live of course, but any patio furniture is going to have a hard time of it and it will remain outside sometimes no matter what your intentions are now.

Standard plastic patio furniture is pretty good and will stand up to all but the coldest of weather, which can make it become fragile. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can have the same effect on cheap plastic chairs. White is the usual colour, but there are others. Make sure that you buy something that will take your weight, especially if you are a bit on the heavy side. I have had legs of plastic chairs go on me, but luckily I was on grass both times. On concrete or near the edge of raised decking could be very dangerous.

Once you have selected your patio table, chairs and possibly loungers, there are one or two other things that I think are essential to allowing the full enjoyment of your patio deck. For example, if you want to use your outdoor furniture in the evening you may find it chilly or you may be troubled by insects.

This need not be a problem. You can get a patio heater for quite a reasonable price. A gas patio heater will keep up to eight people lovely and warm. To complete your patio furniture set, you may want a mosquito trap of some kind.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with commercial patio heaters. If you are interested in patio heaters too, please click through to Residential Patio Heaters.

Reviews About RC Cars And Trucks

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

I have read loads of reviews about remote control cars, because I am a subscriber to a remote control car aficionados’ magazine that carries articles about all the different kinds of remote control gas cars on the market. It also recommends the best one to buy depending on whether you are a first time owner or an RC old hand. The magazine is great, and it helps me see what other RC car owners think about the various models and brands of RC cars and trucks.

I have to say that people’s views vary quite widely on every subject, which is why it’?s probably always best to do your own studying and get what best suits you, rather than getting what other people say will suit you, when they do not even know you. Having said that, many first time buyers do not actually know what they are looking for, and it is really these people that these reports are written for.

However, these reviews are not meant to be taken too factually, rather they are intended as a guideline so that prospective greenhorn purchasers have to ruminate about the aspects of buying a remote control gas car or truck. It also gives experts a run down of the most important facts. Then you need to make up your own mind whether you care, for example, whether the car’s engine runs on gas or nitro.

All in all, I like this magazine because it takes into account people from all walks of life, and its writers and editor appreciate that even if you are interested in buying a gas remote control car, you may not have enough money or you might be reading just out of interest in RC cars or trucks.

We all realize that money is difficult to come by these days, and purchasers are becoming more and more well-informed about the goods they want, which is a good thing in my view. After all, there are other merchants who just desire to get the most money they can for their products and mark up their RC model car prices to excessive amounts in the hope that they will get a couple of stupid customers that did not do their research.

And I am sure that they probably do get a few customers like that, because they do stay in business one way or another and I regularly hear horror stories about individuals who have paid far too much for their RC gas car or truck.

When you ask them why they did not take the trouble to read the reports in a magazine, they usually say that they did not know about the magazines, or even worse, that they did not have enough time. Therefore it seems that they had sufficient time to work like a dog for the money, but then not sufficient time to read a short magazine review? I doubt it very much. With a bit of luck, consumers will continue becoming more and more careful about their purchases.

It is such a pity, so, If you happen to be a new RC car fan, or you know someone who is, please make sure you read the remote control car and truck reviews before making a purchase. It can literally save you hundreds of your hard earned dollars.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with the remote control-gas-car. If you have an interest in model or toy rc vehicles, please go over to our website now at 1/5 Scale RC Cars
